Pakistan exports 3 to 4 million tons of Non-Basmati and 0.7 to 0.85 million tons of Basmati rice annually. In the fiscal year 2022-23,
rice exports from Pakistan reached a substantial 2.149136 billion US Dollars.
Noteworthy is Pakistan’s recent agricultural turnaround, with rice production estimated at 9 million tons in FY24, a significant
increase from the previous year’s 5.5 million tons adversely affected by floods. The aromatic and flavorful Pakistani Rice enjoys
global acclaim, holding a pivotal role as the second-largest staple food crop and a vital component of the nation’s agricultural
exports.
Cultivated across 2.5 million hectares in Sindh, parts of Balochistan, and Punjab, the two main rice varieties are Basmati and Irri.
Basmati, recognized for its superior quality, stands out as the preferred choice. The average yield per acre reflects the crop’s
productivity, with one metric ton for Basmati and one and a half metric tons for Irri rice. Basmati, with its distinctive aroma and
texture, enjoys particular esteem.
Rice cultivation in Pakistan, comprising 55% Irri varieties, 40% Basmati, and 5% other varieties, follows a yearly planting cycle in
May/June, with harvests occurring from September to November, completing the growth cycle in 4 to 5 months. The warm climate
in Pakistan favors the growth of Indica rice, characterized by long grains and unique cooking textures. The delicate balance of factors
such as soil conditions, climate, farming techniques, seed quality, irrigation, and fertilization contributes to the quality and yield of
this water-intensive crop, solidifying Pakistan’s pivotal role in the global rice market.
