Tobacco, a product derived from the cured leaves of various plants of the Nicotiana genus and Solanaceae family,. Additionally, tobacco is
consumed in various forms, including snuff, chewing tobacco and dipping tobacco.
In Pakistan, tobacco cultivation is a significant contributor to the economy. Although it occupies only 0.21% of the total irrigated land, tobacco
plays a vital role in generating income and employment throughout its farming, manufacturing, distribution, and retailing processes. The global
tobacco market, valued at over 760 billion U.S. dollars in 2020, is projected to reach $1,066.6 billion by 2026, indicating a steady market growth
of 3.6% CAGR during the forecast period.
There are five main types of tobacco grown in Pakistan, each catering to specific market demands:
i. Flue-Cured Virginia (FCV)
ii. Flue-Cured Virginia (FCV)
iii. Light Air-Cured (LAC)
iv. Light Sun-Cured tobacco (LSC)
v. White Patta (WP)

The majority of tobacco cultivation takes place in strategic regions such as Charsadda District, Mardan District, Nowshera District, Swabi,
Mansehra, and Buner District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This geographical concentration showcases the economic significance of tobacco farming,
reflecting its role as a key player in Pakistan’s agricultural landscape and economy.
